The Undergraduate program in History stresses a critical understanding of the past. The History major is a highly mentored program where students work with research faculty to develop their intellectual, analytical, and rhetorical skills. We teach students to think historically, to question critically, to reason clearly, to write persuasively, and to argue effectively. Many of our courses transcend national boundaries. Consistent with NU's dedication to experiential learning, we engage our students both in and outside of the classroom.
History majors go on to graduate school in history and museum science, law school and business school. They pursue careers in advertising, journalism, publishing, and teaching. Many work in international fields.
The Department of History at Northeastern University includes more than two dozen faculty and staff, some of whom hold joint or adjunct appointments with other departments or at other institutions and some of whom are affiliated with the department on a part-time basis. In January 2004 the Department welcomed Ilham Khuri-Makdisi, (Ph.D. Harvard), specialist in the Modern Middle East. The Department of History is delighted to welcome another new faculty member in 2005. Dr. Timothy Brown (Ph.D. Berkeley, 2000) is a modern German historian with expertise in colonial and imperial history and transnational social and cultural movements. Northeastern's History faculty have distinguished records of research and publication; many of our faculty sit on the editorial boards of major journals in their fields. In addition to B.A. and B.S. degrees, the Department also offers programs leading to the M.A. in History, Certificates in Public History, and the Ph.D. in History.
