Undergraduate History Research at Northeastern
Northeastern History majors excel at undergraduate research. History majors have conducted research on topics as diverse as The Fenian Brotherhood and Irish-American Nationalism (Shawn Quinn, 2001), Celtic Christianity: Origins, Mission, Maturity, Spirituality (Diana Belanger, 2001) and Intrigue and Complexity in the Villas of Bernardo Buonotalenti (Sean Nealy, 1999).
Tom Jay Cinq Mars has won a Provost-sponsored research grant to study the history of the Spanish Civil War. In Summer 2007, Jay-- a double major in History and Spanish--will travel to Salamanca, Spain, to work in Los Archivos de la Guerra Civil Española.
Cynthia Walker has won a Northeastern University Undergrad Research Grant to study the day to day functions of the Mount Rushmore National Park near Rapid City, South Dakota. Ms. Walker will use the grant to shadow a ranger, study crowd control, aid in several projects that are planned for the park, and investigate the landscape.
Rebecca Dufendach, History BA/MA student has won a Provost's Research Grant for her project, "Mexican Women's Social Activism." Ms. Dufendach will use the grant to travel to Mexico in the summer of 2007 to conduct research on the role of women in the Oaxaca teachers' strike of 2006 and its historical antecedents.
History major, Jahel Dumornay has been awarded a Provost Research Grant to continue research for her project, a study of the colonial foundations of racial distinctions and racial conflict in Rwanda
Sophomore Honors student, Caitlin Rogan has received a Provost-sponsored Undergraduate Research Grant to travel to Paris in April-May 2006 to begin research on the historical antecedents of the crisis of Muslim violence in contemporary France.
Mr. Jeremy Parker was a recipient of a Spring 2006 Provost's Research Grant for his project with Professor Tom Havens, "Social Movements in Postwar Japan."
Katlyn Porter-Mahoney has received a Provost's Research Grant to do research in German archives for her project “Primacy of Ideology? ‘Sonderlager L’ and Nazi Intelligence on the Eastern Front.”
Ms. Catherine Nunez, junior History Major, has received a FURI (Faculty-Undergraduate Research Initiative) Fellowship for Spring semester 2006 for her work with Professor and Chair Laura L. Frader on "Gender, Race, and French Colonialism."
History Major Alice Saunders was the recipient of a Provost Research Grant, in the Fall of 2005, that allowed her conduct research for her thesis project "Vietnam Vets Against the Vietnam War"
History Major Sean Kiernan was the recipient of a Provost Research Grant, in the Spring of 2005, that enabled him to conduct research for his project, The Soviet War against German Parachutists, 1944.
History Major Ilya Luvish went to Israel on a Gladys Brooks Fellowship, in the Spring of 2005, to research his Senior Honors Thesis on "Pogroms in Post-World War II Eastern Europe."
In the Spring of 2004 Honors History Major and recipient of a Matthews Undergraduate Research Award for 2003-2004, Jared McBride wrote a History Honors thesis on Malyn, July 1943: Anatomy of a German Reprisal. For more on Jared McBride's work in History, see www.choosecas.neu.edu
History majors also collaborate with faculty in the Faculty-Undergraduate Research Initiative (FURI) funded by the College of Arts and Sciences.
