Admissions Information
Applicants for graduate study in History are strongly encouraged to start in the Fall Semester so that study begins with the Methodology course. Interested prospective students should review the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences admissions information at www.cas.neu.edu/graduate/admissions.html. Here students can also fill out the online application and find information on required materials and important deadlines. Applications and supporting materials should be sent to The Graduate School College of Arts and Sciences, 124 Meserve Hall, Northeastern University, Boston, MA 02115, by February 1st.
Applications are first reviewed by the Department's Graduate Committee, and a recommendation is then made to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, who then makes the final decision.
Most students are admitted as full-time, but part-time status is also possible. Some students are accepted with "Special Student" status. These students take up to 12 semester hours worth of coursework (overall) and are considered non-matriculating.
Financial Aid
Information on tuition, fees, billing policies and procedures is provided by the Northeastern University Customer Service Center and can be found at www.customerservice.neu.edu
The Department of History provides a number of competitive financial awards to entering graduate students. Those interested in departmental funding should make note on Section II of the application. Students may be granted a Northeastern University Tuition Assistantship (NUTA), or a Stipended Graduate Assistantship (SGA). Advanced Ph.D. candidates often receive paid instructorships.
NUTAs provide a tuition waiver of a predetermined dollar amount in exchange for 10 hours of work per week, and require full-time study (8 semester hours per semester). Students at the top of the applicant pool, both masters and Ph.D., are awarded SGA's.
Students of African-American origin may compete for Martin Luther King Jr. fellowships from the John D. O'Bryant African American Institute. For more information on this please see www.aai.neu.edu
Additional financial aid information is available from the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Northeastern University Student Financial Services Office at www.financialaid.neu.edu/home.php. Both the Federal Financial Aid form and the NU Institutional Aid form are available on this site.
