In 2008 my American Disasters: 201 Calamities that Shook the Nation (Checkmark Books, a Facts On File imprint) was published. This title was the paperback version of Disasters, Accidents, and Crises in American History (Facts On File, 2008).

In March 2009 I give an Organization of American Historians Distinguished Lecturer talk on “Depressions and Elections” at the Fischer Policy and Cultural Institute, Nichols College. I give my New England Historical Association presidential address at the spring meeting on “Authors Versus Academics: Reflections on Historical Writing.”

I am currently working on two projects. One is entitled American Wars, which examines critical decisions that were made in military-diplomatic conflicts from the War for Independence to the second Iraq War. This book will be a volume in Facts On File series entitled Issues and Controversies in American History, for which I serve as general editor. The second project analyzes the impact of depressions on politics and society in the United States, but also in comparative perspective.

An Update Edition (2009) of my American Presidential Campaigns and Elections (Armonk, NY: ME Sharpe, 2003, 3 volumes), co-edited with William G. Shade, was completed. The new edition includes an electronic version.

My academic duties are divided between the History Department, where I teach the courses on American and comparative political and economic history, and the Law, Policy, and Society Program, in which I am Professor of Public Policy.
