Currently I am writing and editing a book entitled The Encyclopedia of Disasters, Accidents, and Crises in American History (NY: Facts on File, 2007). This project has taken me into some new and fascinating areas of the nation’s past. I also continue my research on the connections between economic depressions and society in the United States between the Civil War and the Great Depression. This project has a trans-national comparative dimension. When time permits I plan to write an interpretive volume on Building the American State: the Long Nineteenth Century in Comparative Perspective.
